AMD has unveiled Helion, a rack-scale reference design built specifically for agentic AI — and its headline spec is deliberately provocative: up to 32,768 CPU cores in a single rack, with no GPU required.
Revealed at the Open Compute Project Global Summit in San Jose on Monday, Helion is AMD's answer to a shift the company sees coming in data centers. AI agents don't just call large language models — they execute code, query databases, and orchestrate multi-step workflows. Those tasks are CPU-heavy, and AMD's bet is that agent infrastructure needs a design centered on them, per The Register.
Helion comes in two flavors. The hyperscale configuration is CPU-only, packing up to 128 sixth-generation EPYC "Venice" processors — 256 Zen 6 cores each — for 32,768 cores total, handling agent execution while inference requests route to separate GPU systems. The enterprise configuration combines EPYC CPUs with up to 16 Instinct MI350P accelerators in one rack, putting agent execution and model inference together. Both offer liquid or air cooling and up to 102 Tbps of networking.
Crucially, Helion is a blueprint, not a product AMD sells. The company plans to contribute the OCP-compliant specifications to the Open Compute Project so the community can adopt and extend them — the open-hardware inverse of Nvidia's walled-garden approach. Cisco, Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Supermicro, Foxconn, QCT, and Wiwynn are on board, with partner-built configurations expected in November 2026.
"With AMD Helion, we are bringing Epyc performance, open software and flexible rack designs together so our partners can build systems around customer needs and make efficient use of available power," said Dan McNamara, AMD's SVP for Compute and Enterprise AI.
Wall Street shrugged. AMD shares fell 2.3% on Monday — a fourth straight down day — as analysts reportedly judged the revenue upside from new rack designs to be distant, per AI Affairs citing MarketWatch. That's the tension in the story: Helion is AMD's biggest open-hardware bet since the GPU-focused Helios rack earlier this year, but blueprint announcements don't move quarters — shipped racks do. The November partner deliveries will be the first real test of whether the agentic-AI infrastructure wave is built on open designs, or on whoever ships the most closed ones.
