Three days after the first iPhone Duo screens split along the hinge, Apple has responded. In a statement to MacRumors, it called the problem one "impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units" and told affected owners to contact AppleCare for a replacement.
"The response to iPhone Duo from early users has been incredibly positive, and we are seeing exciting things from developers who are rapidly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor. We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement."
What Apple didn't say is telling: no cause, no fix, no numbers. MacRumors reports the problem is limited in scope — the crack appears shortly after purchase, not weeks in. Good news if your Duo survived the weekend; less so if you're waiting on a replacement, since limited stock has left some owners in line.
The scale is fogged by fakes: MacRumors notes some circulating crack images are AI-generated, making the true count hard to pin down. What is consistent: the crack lands in the same place — the lower half of the inner display along the hinge — often preceded by a stuck feeling or a popping noise.
iFixit's teardown offers the first engineering theory. Its CT scans and 3D hinge model point to a center support bar that may not retract as the phone closes, pressing on the display. iFixit gave the Duo a provisional 5/10 repairability score, its best for a foldable, while calling the inner display and hinge "a bear to repair." An out-of-warranty inner display replacement runs $999.
The stakes go beyond a few broken screens. The Duo is Apple's first foldable and its priciest iPhone ever at $1,999, and the hinge — more than 100 components — was the engineering story Apple told at launch. A day-one crack is the failure mode foldable skeptics have awaited, and "small number" calms the launch-weekend narrative without committing Apple to anything about the cause.
What to watch: whether replacements hold up, whether the case count grows past launch weekend, and whether Apple gets more specific than "small number." If your Duo shows a bright line along the fold, stop folding it and call AppleCare while the return window is open.
