Five days ago, Apple retail staff were reportedly telling anyone who'd listen to stay home on October 23 — no iPhone Duo for walk-ins, don't bother. This morning, the official line got friendlier and a lot more carefully worded: in a statement shared with MacRumors, Apple said stores will have "limited" iPhone Duo available for walk-in customers on launch day.

The quote, verbatim: "On Friday morning, our teams look forward to welcoming customers at Apple Stores to experience iPhone Duo and the incredible iPhone line-up for themselves. Apple Stores will have limited iPhone Duo available for walk-in customers, and we're working hard to get this revolutionary new product into customers' hands as quickly as possible."

That's a tonal reversal from MacRumors' own earlier reporting, which had employees warning that walk-in stock would be essentially zero and actively discouraging people without pre-orders from showing up. But the small print matters more than the welcome mat. Apple gave 9to5Mac the full country split: walk-in stock lands in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, Australia, Mexico, Singapore, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Türkiye, Macao, and "certain" stores in Italy. Everywhere else — France, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the UAE — it's reservation-only pickup through a specific time slot.

Why the split? MacRumors notes Apple restricts walk-ins in part to manage crowd sizes and as an anti-scalping measure. That connects directly to this morning's other Duo story: Apple has quietly capped pre-orders at two units per customer. Apple is now rationing its $1,999 foldable across every channel at once — pre-orders, walk-ins, and launch-day geography.

And even where walk-ins are allowed, "limited" plus "extraordinary" pre-order demand — Apple's own word — plus Apple's admission that supply will sell out quickly on Friday adds up to a line. AppleInsider notes every Apple Store is opening early Friday, which may mostly help pre-order pickup appointments. For anyone in the US without an order, the store queue is the only way to get a Duo from Apple on launch day — and Apple's online store still won't show pickup reservations until October 24.

The honest read: Apple wants the launch-day line back — the theater of people queuing for a foldable is worth more than any ad — without the mess of turning thousands of empty-handed customers away. "Limited" is the word doing all the work here. Set the alarm Friday, and temper the expectations.
