OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are all about to ship new models — and this time the competition isn't about who has the biggest brain. According to The Information, October should be "a busy one for new model releases," with each lab attacking a different weakness in the current generation: cost, intuitiveness, and visual skill.

The most concrete evidence is OpenAI's. AI researcher Lumina spotted references to GPT-6.1 Terra inside Microsoft's code repositories, where 18 evaluation configurations were quietly switched over from GPT-5.6 Terra. That's not a rumor — that's backend test wiring, and it usually means a launch is close. The Information reports the new Terra is expected to outperform GPT-6.1 Sol while costing less, a direct shot at Anthropic on pricing. For reference, Sol currently sells at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.

Anthropic's answer goes the opposite direction. Early testers told The Information that its unreleased model — which could land under the Fable or Opus brand — is "especially good at discerning a person's underlying intentions and goals even if they don't give" clear instructions. Instead of generic advice or shallow code fixes, it reportedly spots underlying architectural flaws behind software bugs and offers more creative solutions. If that holds up, it's the first model launch in a while sold on judgment rather than benchmarks.

Then there's Google. Gemini 4 Carbon follows close behind the recent Gemini 4 Argon debut, and testing notes suggest Google is leaning into its one clear edge: visual tasks. Carbon is positioned as a tool for analyzing video content and automated website testing — less about being the smartest model, more about being the most useful one for multimodal work.

Reporter Stephanie Palazzolo cautioned that some of these launches could slip into November, so don't set your calendar by it. But the direction is unmistakable: the labs have stopped trying to win purely on scale. OpenAI wants to be the cheapest capable option, Anthropic wants to be the one that reads your mind, and Google wants to be the one that actually sees. Watch what OpenAI prices Terra at — that's the number Anthropic will have to answer.
