OpenAI is shutting down GPT-4o in the API. A new entry on its deprecations page, dated October 14, 2026, says the company notified developers that GPT-4o snapshots gpt-4o-2024-08-06 and gpt-4o-2024-11-20, plus GPT-4o mini, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini, leave the platform on January 14, 2027. The recommended replacement for all four is gpt-6-luna. Fine-tuned versions of those models follow the same shutdown date as their base models.

That is about three months of notice. OpenAI's own policy says generally available models get at least six months before retirement, with a carve-out when "safety or compliance concerns require a faster timeline." The page does not explain why this batch is shorter. ChatGPT users already lost routine access to GPT-4o earlier; the API was the last official place to call those 2024 snapshots.

The #keep4o crowd on X is treating the date as a hard cutoff for workflows and fine-tunes built around 4o's style. Developers still on those models have until mid-January to migrate, or to ask sales about dedicated capacity after the shutdown.
