While Apple is trying to make folding phones normal, Samsung is busy making them jewelry. The company unveiled the Samsung W27 on Thursday, a China-exclusive foldable that takes the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra's internals and wraps them in gold, porcelain-inspired colors, and a price tag that starts at CNY 18,999 — roughly $2,850.

The W series has been running as a secret luxury line since 2008, sold through China Telecom under the name 心系天下, "Heart of the World." It started as flip phones for executives who considered keypads a flex, and it has survived into the foldable era by getting fancier every year. The W27 is, by most accounts, the best-dressed foldable Samsung has ever made.

Under the gold, this is a Z Fold 8 Ultra: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, an 8-inch folding display plus a 6.5-inch cover screen, 200MP main camera, 5,000mAh battery, and 215 grams. What changes is everything you touch. The Victus glass back becomes Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3. The aluminum frame gets a gold relief texture Samsung compares to cut gemstones. The two colors — Jihu Blue and Jixia Hong — are drawn from imperial Ming porcelain glazes, the kind of reference most phone makers would reserve for a limited-edition collab. Even the camera island is frosted gold, and the hinge cover wears a "Heart to the World" gold emblem.

There's substance underneath the pageantry, at least for the Chinese market it serves: Tiantong satellite calling and texting, with the launch bundle including a year of satellite service, and Android 17 with One UI 9 out of the box. Samsung is also throwing in a Kevlar case, a 45W charger, and a collector's edition box — a small admission that a $2,850 phone should feel expensive out of the box, not a year later at the repair counter.

The timing is the story. One week ago, Apple put the $2,199 iPhone Duo on sale to the general public, betting that folding phones are ready for the mainstream. Samsung's answer is that they were always ready — for a very different buyer. The W27 isn't trying to convert the masses; it's a status object for the business elite who buy phones the way they buy watches, in partnership with the carrier that has sold this line for nearly two decades.

The catch, as always: it's China-only, on sale November 13, and the 1TB model runs CNY 21,999 (~$3,300). Western buyers will have to import one, which means the most interesting foldable of the fall is also the one most of the world can't have. That may be the point — scarcity is the whole brand.
