Apple published estimated U.S. repair prices for the iPhone Duo without AppleCare+, and the top end is steep: $1,499 for "other damage," MacRumors reports. A replacement battery is $229. The replaceable nano-texture cover layer over the inner display is $49 without AppleCare+ and $19 with it.

The rest of the out-of-warranty menu: back glass $199, rear camera $229, outer display $379, outer display plus back glass $509, and inner display $999. With AppleCare+ ($19.99 a month, $199.99 a year, or $399 upfront), those drop to $0 for a battery below 80% capacity, $19 for the cover layer, $29 for back glass or outer display, $99 for the inner display or other accidental damage, and $149 for theft or loss.

Pre-orders start Friday, October 16. The phone goes on sale October 23. If you're skipping AppleCare+ on a foldable this expensive, those numbers are the real cost of ownership.
