Shopify just took the training wheels off AI shopping. Starting Tuesday, shoppers can wire any AI agent into Shop and point it at more than a billion listings in Shopify's catalog, not only Meta's Muse.
In September, Shopify teamed up with Meta so Muse could browse and buy on someone's behalf. Today's move drops the exclusive partnership requirement. You connect an agent to your Shop account, set rules like a budget or "only show fast shipping," then approve each purchase. Checkout still runs through Shop Pay inside the chat, and the order lands back in the Shop app. The catalog covers products on Shopify storefronts and plenty that aren't.
That puts Shopify in the middle of the agent-commerce fight Amazon has been picking with Perplexity and Muse over whether bots should shop for people at all. Amex spent this morning publishing Intent Intelligence to stop agents from buying the wrong sneakers. Shopify's answer is simpler: open the aisle, keep the human on the "buy" button.
