Sony announced the ECM-W5 on Wednesday, a wireless microphone kit with two transmitters and one receiver for $399.99. It ships in November, and the receiver ($189.99) and extra transmitters ($189.99 each) will be sold on their own too.

The headline feature is 32-bit float. On a compatible Sony camera, the receiver sits in the Multi Interface Shoe, takes power from the body, and passes the audio digitally into the same file as your video, so there's nothing to sync later. Each transmitter also keeps a backup on 64GB of built-in storage, good for about 90 hours at 32-bit float/48kHz. Sony quotes up to 500 meters of line-of-sight range, 11 hours per transmitter, timecode, up to four channels in-camera, a 3.5mm input for lavs, and a USB-C adapter for phones and PCs.

This is aimed squarely at people already shooting Sony. The DJI Mic 3 is $259, and if you're not plugging into an Alpha body, it's hard to see why you'd pay the extra $140. If you are, recording float straight into the camera file is a real time saver.
