Two California Highway Patrol officers were seriously injured when a Tesla slammed into the back of a parked patrol car on I-80, and the driver told police he was asleep with Full Self-Driving engaged. The officers were working the scene of an earlier accident and were taken to a hospital, according to CHP.

Video released by CHP shows the Tesla driving past flares, cones and flashing emergency lights before it hits the cruiser. The agency used the crash to make a point about the branding: "Despite its name, full self-driving is not fully autonomous. Technology does not relieve drivers of their responsibility to safely operate their vehicles."

Tesla has been here before. The Verge notes that NHTSA opened an investigation into Autopilot in 2021 after a string of crashes into parked emergency vehicles, and later found the system didn't do enough to keep drivers engaged. Tesla pushed a 2023 update that added more alerts, and regulators then opened another probe into whether that fix went far enough. A driver saying he fell asleep with the system on is exactly what those alerts were supposed to prevent.
