OpenAI shut down its ChatGPT Atlas browser, and now it's putting more of that work into Chrome instead. The Verge reports that with ChatGPT's Chrome extension installed, you can tag Chrome in the ChatGPT web or desktop app and it will look at your open tabs. OpenAI's demo shows someone asking it to compare three sofas they have open side by side.
The sidebar also got an upgrade. It now has your full conversation history in Chat or Work, so you don't have to leave the page you're on. ChatGPT Work can also "control" your tabs for tasks like sending messages, filling out forms, or downloading files, and it can organize or group tabs. That puts it right next to Google's Gemini-powered auto browse feature in Chrome.
It's a smart move. Most people were never going to switch browsers for an AI tool, but plenty already have Chrome open all day.
